چکیده

A two-dimensional model problem is used to study the evolution of the cross section of a transverse jet and the counter-rotating vortex pair CVP . The solution to the model problem shows deformation of the jet similar to that observed in a transverse jet, and also yields a CVP. These phenomena are explained in terms of the acceleration the jet experiences in the direction of the cross-flow, and the pressure field around the jet. The initial stages of the jet’s evolution are at constant acceleration while the later stages are at constant velocity. The effects of Reynolds number and velocity ratio on the evolution of the jet are used to explain the dependence of CVP formation on velocity ratio, as observed by Smith and Mungal J. Vorticity formulation for an actuated jet in crossflow

The mixing properties of a transverse jet are important to a variety of engineering applications. This study seeks to develop actuation strategies that manipulate the geometry and rate of mixing between jet and crossflow, based on a mechanistic understanding of vorticity structure and evolution. Previous studies have shown that vorticity from both the jet boundary layer and the channel wall bou...

An Innovation in Film Cooling of the Gas Turbine Blades Applying an Upstream Jet

A new design concept is introduced to control the near-wall integration between the hot-gas boundary layer and the cooling jets in order to enhance the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of the gas turbine blades. In this new approach, another film cooling port, having a very low blowing ratio, which prevents formation of the counter-rotating vortex pare, is applied just upstream of the main ...

Three-dimensional simulation of square jets in cross-flow.

Direct numerical simulations are performed to predict the three-dimensional unsteady flow interactions in the near-field of a square jet issuing normal to a cross-flow. The simulated flow features reveal the formation of an upstream horseshoe vortex system, which is the result of an interaction between the oncoming channel floor shear layer and the transverse jet; the growth of a sequence of Ke...
